Here I’m shown back in May of 2019 at the Wellington WHAM contest getting ready to fly my rather worn out Half Gollywock, however to her credit, she sill has some flights left in her. 🙂

Hi—I’m Jeff Renz, president of HAFFA and one of the contributing authors of the HAFFA Posts. During these uncertain times, we will try to keep you informed of HAFFA’s current activities and the status of future events.

November 2021

Paul Morgenroth, III brought this delicate but very flight worthy indoor model to the October 9th 2021 Flying Session and had this to say:

“It’s called the Guardian and it was built for the  Romanian Max category. The motor stick has been braced with a tensioned strip of floss because the rubber pulls so hard. 18″ prop, 3/16″ rubber. A 24×11″ wing will replace the current 24×9″ you see here. It needs all the area it can get, and frankly the wing wasn’t stiff enough either. I’ve used 1/8×1/16 for the leading edge, if not both spars. Perhaps harder balsa works too. I used 7lb balsa.”

Paul is always on the lookout to better his models through all of these but not limited to these methods:

Analyzing and coming up with solutions, advice from others, research, using different approaches, trying different materials and last but not least, there’s always trial and error. 🙂

Gary Hodson’s Gee Bee Racer Model D No-cal

Ienjoy No-Cal models because they look like 3 dimensional scale planes when in flight but are easier to build and are lighter so they potentially fly longer. They are limited to a 16″ Max. wingspan which is a good size for indoor flying. 

The FAC No-Cal rules do not specify a minimum weight. This helps indoor free flight enthusiasts learn an essential indoor building skill. Your 1st No-Cal does not have to be ultra light, just carefully built.  

I built the Gee Bee Model D from a 3 view drawing I found in a book on air racing planes. When scaling the wings to 16″ span, imagine the fuselage has no width. After pre-shrinking white tissue paper I printed the paint scheme onto the tissue with an inkjet printer & attached it to the air frame with glue stick. 

The finished model with prop weights 2.49 grams, not including the rubber motor.
